The major convenience store chain On The Run (OTR) in Australia will be accepting the use of cryptocurrencies as a mode of payment by July of 2022. The initiative is in partnership with Singapore-based Crypto.com and aims to promote the widespread use and adoption of digital assets. It is also one of the first and largest crypto projects in the country.
On July 22, each OTR store in South Australia, Adelaide and parts of Victoria will be connected to Crypto.com’s new merchant system. This means that users can now pay with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin among many others to pump gas, buy drinks, food and more.
To do this, users need to have a Crypto.com account and have the app installed on their phones. They can then use it on the point of sale terminals provided by Datamesh, a local company in Australia that specializes in payment systems. It serves as the connector between OTR and Crypto.com to complete the transactions made.
Over 170 different OTR outlets scattered across South Australia will soon be supporting crypto as a mode of payment. However, the specific number and location of said branches are yet to be disclosed by the company. The announcement will likely be released once the official launch date draws near.
Once officially launched in July 2022, OTR and its parent company Peregrine Corporation will be the largest retail company in Australia to accept crypto as a mode of payment.
According to the Information Age publication platform based in Australia, the OTR parent company Peregrine has also expressed its excitement about this new venture. Peregrine Executive Chairman Yasser Shahin shared the potential of this new project.
‘The growth and mainstream acceptance of cryptocurrency adoption in Australia and the rest of the world has been phenomenal and has offered us a clear opportunity to tap into the momentum of this fast-growing space for the benefit of our customers’, he shares.
The OTR store chain in Australia does not only specialize in providing gas and basic convenience products but is also in partnership with other brands. Some of these include Subway, Krispy Kreme, Smokemart, Happy Wash, Wok in a Box and many more, all of which will also be accepting digital currencies when the change has been implemented.
